Why Does My Korean SIM Work for Internet but Not Identity Verification?
A Korean phone number does not, by itself, confirm that a mobile plan supports 본인인증, the identity-verification process used by some Korean online services.
Last reviewed:
1. Check four separate functions
- Mobile data, calls, text messages and online identity verification are different functions.
- Ask about the specific product you intend to buy. Do not assume that receiving SMS means online identity verification will work.
2. Understand a tourist SIM’s limits
- KT’s tourist SIM/eSIM guide describes passport and entry checks for calls and SMS, but separately states that personal authentication is not supported.
- That activation check is different from Korean online identity verification. This is a product-specific example, not a rule for every prepaid plan.
3. Ask before choosing a plan
- Ask whether the exact product supports online verification, which documents you need and whether it can receive the required messages.
- Seoul’s official guidance says requirements vary by carrier and immigration status. Documents may include a passport, residence card and an account in your own name.
4. If verification fails
- Keep the error message and ask the provider what information or product restriction needs checking.
- Do not assume every postpaid plan solves the problem. Confirm the product and your registration details with the provider.
