SORA RENTAL NOTE · 45

Does “student housing” include international students?

Read the nationality rules in a public housing notice, distinguish university dormitories from LH rentals, and plan for an actual move-in date.

Content checked · 3 October 2026

The key points

  • Student status is only one part of eligibility; check the nationality rule separately.
  • A restriction in one public rental program does not describe every housing program.
  • University dormitory eligibility and room availability require a separate check.

A “youth” or “university student” heading is not a promise that every enrolled student can apply. For example, the linked 2026 LH youth purchased-rental housing notice excludes foreign applicants. This is an example of that program’s eligibility rules, not a rule that all public or university housing is closed to foreigners.

Start with the full notice and any corrected notice, rather than a social-media summary. Look for the applicant qualifications, nationality exclusions, and the date on which qualifications are assessed. A category for overseas Korean nationals does not automatically include foreign citizens of Korean ancestry; ask the operator which category your citizenship and documents fit.

University dormitories have their own application process

A university dormitory is a different application route from an LH rental. Korea University’s official housing page describes accommodation for international students, while expressly noting that a room cannot be guaranteed for everyone. Being eligible to apply and receiving a housing offer are separate steps.

For Korea University, Kyung Hee University or HUFS, use your own university’s current dormitory notice. Ask whether your degree or exchange status is covered, which semester the application concerns, and whether vacation stays are included. Do not use a friend’s previous acceptance as proof of your own eligibility or availability.

Make a small comparison sheet: program name, eligibility confirmed, application deadline, selection result, payment date and actual move-in date. If a notice recruits people for a waiting list, ask how room allocation works before treating it as an accommodation booking. Keep the operator’s answer with the notice you checked.

Arrange a realistic backup if the result will arrive after your flight or your current lease ends. Before paying for another room, check its cancellation terms and whether two housing commitments would overlap. Apply truthfully using your own status; another student’s name or registration record is not a workaround for ineligibility.

What to check

  1. Download the full, latest notice, including corrections.
  2. Ask the operator to confirm eligibility for your nationality and student category.
  3. Check result, payment and move-in dates separately.
  4. Keep a backup until a room is actually allocated and its terms are accepted.

Common questions

Does a Korean Residence Card make me a Korean applicant?

No. A Residence Card establishes foreign registration; it does not change citizenship or remove a program’s nationality restriction.

If LH excludes me, are university dormitories also unavailable?

Not necessarily. They use separate rules and selection processes. Check the current university notice and available rooms rather than drawing a conclusion from an LH decision.
