SORA RENTAL NOTE · 42
Will paying my housing deposit affect my visa financial evidence?
Plan housing payments and visa financial evidence together using the requirements for your own study situation.
Content checked · 3 October 2026
The key points
- Check whether financial evidence is required in your own extension application.
- Money paid to a landlord is not money remaining in your bank account.
- Plan truthful funding and payment dates; do not assume a lease replaces a bank statement.

My housing deposit and visa paperwork are due around the same time.

Plan both separately so the same money is not counted twice.

I will check my real balance and the school’s current requirements.

Confirm the document and payment dates with the right offices.
Start with your own application category
- Your application category
- University office
- Certificate and contents
Financial evidence is not identical for every student. Korea University’s undergraduate extension guidance, for example, lists a financial statement for regular-semester students below its specified GPA threshold and for extra-semester students. Where required, that guidance calls for the student’s own Korean bank account. It should not be treated as a universal rule for every university or programme.
Ask your international office which instructions apply to your degree, semester and academic situation. Confirm the evidence, amount, account holder, issue date and any balance-maintenance condition. Record the answer and notice date before agreeing a large housing payment.
Separate money paid out from available account funds
- Refundable deposit
- Account balance
- Tuition and living costs
A rental agreement can show that you paid or owe a housing deposit. It does not itself show that the same amount remains available in your bank account. Unless the reviewing authority confirms another accepted method, do not replace the requested financial statement with the lease or add the landlord-held deposit to your account balance.
Put deposit payments, tuition, living costs and application dates on one calendar. Record when genuine support will become available, not merely when someone hopes to send it. This cash-flow plan can reveal a shortage early enough to discuss lawful funding or housing choices.
Resolve a shortfall openly
- Confirmed funds
- University office
- Agreed terms
If funds fall short, contact your international office and relevant immigration office before applying. Explain the actual timing and ask which evidence is accepted. Separately, you may ask the landlord to adjust the payment schedule; a change needs their agreement and a clear written record.
Use genuine statements and truthful explanations. Do not alter bank documents or circulate borrowed money solely to create a misleading snapshot of funds. This guide gives no general permission to withdraw required funds immediately after obtaining a certificate; follow the actual instructions for your application.
What to check
- Confirm whether financial evidence is required for your own case.
- Check whose account, which document and which dates are accepted.
- Calculate the real balance after deposit, tuition and living costs.
- Resolve any shortfall with the appropriate offices and keep truthful records.
Common questions
Does every D-2 student need the same bank balance?
This guide sets no common minimum. Check your university, programme, academic circumstances and current immigration instructions for the requirements that apply to you.
Can my parents’ overseas statement always replace mine?
Do not assume so. The KU example specifically requires the student’s own Korean account where that statement is needed. Ask your own university and immigration office whether any alternative is accepted in your case.
